  •   Maryland guard Stoglin declares for NBA draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland guard Terrell Stoglin has entered the NBA draft after receiving a one-year suspension from the school.

Terrell Stoglin publicly annoyed after benching

  • When Terrell Stoglin parted ways with the University of Maryland following a yearlong suspension, the majority of Maryland fans panicked.

Stoglin was the featured piece to the Terps' roster in 2011-12. He accounted for quite a hefty portion of Maryland's offense last season, scoring 21.6 points per game en route to an ACC scoring title.

SG Sean Mosley graduated last week, and G/F Mychal Parker was suspended [and transferred] for the same drug issue as Stoglin was. Thus, Maryland's backcourt was left incredibly thin.

    Until now.

Coach Mark Turgeon has landed Albany transfer Logan Aronhalt, a combo guard who averaged 13.8 points per game last season as a junior.

Aronhalt graduated from Albany's undergrad program in just three years.

Now, Aronhalt is using the "Russell Wilson rule." Similar to Wilson, Aronhalt is basically telling the NCAA that he is pursuing a graduate degree at a different institution.

By doing this, Aronhalt will avoid sitting out one year, which is typically a standard for college basketball transfers.

What this also means is that Aronhalt will only suit up in red and gold for one season.

Aronhalt's presence adds much-needed depth to Maryland's backcourt.

Before the transfer, the Terps only returned one true guard, Pe'Shon Howard, who has been constantly hampered by injuries throughout the past year. Aronhalt is valuable insurance for the injury-prone Howard.

The only other scholarship guards on Maryland's roster are freshmen Sam Cassell Jr. and Seth Allen, neither who were ranked in the ESPNU 100.

Nick Faust, possibly Maryland's most talented player, will most likely see a lot of time on the wing and really is not a true guard.

Stoglin, who would have been a junior this upcoming season, would have provided more than just scoring. He was battle-tested through two years of ACC play and would have assumed a leadership role.

Aronholt has three years of college experience, including a matchup against Maryland last season in which he scored 13 points.

In every facet which Terrell Stoglin contributed to Maryland's success, Aronhalt will be able to at least moderately make that weakness more forgettable. He is somewhat of a replica of Stoglin's style of play and can score the basketball with the same demeanor as Stoglin did so well in a Terp uniform.

Aronhalt isn't a terrific distributor. In fact, he averaged less assists per game than Terrell Stoglin last season, who was often criticized for selfishness.

So, while Aronhalt doesn't necessarily provide supreme passing ability, Stoglin was practically inept in that sense, anyway.

When Maryland is missing that explosive guard, that streaky shooter, that crafty ball handler, and most importantly, that veteran leadership, Aronhalt will be able to step in and provide it.

The addition of Aronholt is also perfect for Maryland's roster situation, as he will only take up one of Maryland's coveted scholarships for one season.

Maryland is pursuing rising guards in the 2013 recruiting class—such as Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Rysheed Jordan, and Pookie Powell.

Since Aronhalt will have graduated by the time any of those guards would play for Maryland, he therefore will not detract any interest to Maryland from any of those players.

Aronholt is a one year plug-in to solve some of Maryland's depth issues in the backcourt, and Mark Turgeon could not have done a better job nabbing this perfect replacement for Terrell Stoglin.

  • When a highly-touted recruit from Philadelphia eliminates power programs such as Georgetown and Marquette from his list but keeps La Salle and Drexel, it only means one thing.

    Location is a huge factor.

Rysheed Jordan, a 2013 point guard from Philly, has since cut both of those Philadelphia schools from his list. Nonetheless, their longevity as contenders for his services was a strong indication of his preference for staying close to home.

He attends Vaux Roberts High School in North Philadelphia, and plays for the AAU Philly Pride.

Temple has long been the favorite for Jordan's destination. He seems to attend the majority of Temple's home games and has strong ties to the Owls' coaching staff.

He lives within a very small proximity of Temple's campus and already carries the nickname, "Prince of North Philly." It's safe to say Jordan has plenty of reasons to take his talents to the newest members of the Big East.

Aside from Temple, Jordan currently lists three other schools, according to InsideMDSports.

Maryland is in second place for the Jordan sweepstakes. Villanova remains a legitimate potential landing spot. Kansas has also entered the race.

Rivals.com ranks the 6-foot-3 Jordan as the 12th best junior in high school basketball. He is also ranked as the third best point guard in his class.

Jordan had been aiming for a July deadline for his college decision to be made. Since Temple has not once fallen from the frontrunner title, all signs pointed toward the elite distributor selecting the Owls when he would have decided in under two months.

Now, Rysheed is thinking the whole process over.

According to InsideMDSports, a Maryland recruiting website, Jordan is not quite ready to make a decision yet.

  •   Maryland Basketball: Why Terps Will Beat out Temple, KU, Nova for Rysheed Jordan

"He doesn’t entirely know what he wants to do. Does he want to stay close to home or does he want to [get away]? He hasn’t really decided yet, so he’ll probably wait a while,” “It’s still Maryland and Temple at the top, and then you’ve got Villanova. Kansas is in there, too. It’s the same as before, pretty much. He’s a Philly guy and he’s got a really close relationship with his mother. He’s willing to go a few hours, but probably not too far. But you never know if that could change. Kids are so fickle.” Jordan most likely would have chosen Temple had he chosen in July. Now that he is waiting until his senior season, ample time exists for Maryland to jump ahead of Temple.Any college recruit desires to enter a winning environment, something that has recently existed at Temple and not Maryland. With Maryland's outstanding recruiting class and development of current players, that's about to change. If Jordan were to come to Maryland, his presence would create a deep and talented backcourt foursome with Seth Allen, Pe'Shon Howard, and Sam Cassell Jr.Evaluators have consistently praised Jordan for being unselfish. He loves to dish the ball and will be able to do that efficiently with Evan Smotrycz, Nick Faust, and Jake Layman on the wings. In addition, the Terps will have Charles Mitchell, Shaquille Cleare and most importantly, Alex Len. All three are productive forwards who will love to receive dump-downs from Rysheed Jordan.Maryland's roster is built to succeed in 2013 when Jordan would be a freshman in college. On the flip side, Temple's roster is on the decline. By 2013, the Owls will have lost their four best players from 2011-12 in Khalif Wyatt, Ramone Moore, Juan Fernandez and Michael Eric.Temple is joining a power conference and will most likely struggle with their adjustment into stiffer competition. The Atlantic-10 has been strong, but the Big East is considered one of the top leagues in the entire country. While Temple will be rebuilding and struggling to reach the upper half of the Big East in 2013, Maryland will have returned to the ACC's top tier.Jordan is looking to succeed, and with the added decision-making time that he's taking, Maryland now has the opportunity to show Jordan that the Terps can succeed.Temple seemed to be close to a lock for Jordan's services, but the circumstances have shifted.Jordan has increased Maryland's chances by extending his decision window, and he may not even know it just yet.Read more Maryland Terrapins Basketball news on BleacherReport.com
