The Philadelphia 76ers are professional basketball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were originally known as the Syracuse Nationals and are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA. Their name “76ers” is derived from 1776, the year the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. The nickname was shortened to the “Sixers" by newspaper journalists and the two names became synonymous. The 76ers have had some of the greatest players in history including Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Allen Iverson and Charles Barkley. They have won three NBA titles and have only been back to the finals once since winning in the 1982 to 83 season. The 2010-2011 season finds them back in the playoffs again, this time against the Miami Heat.
